Jay Gatsby is a young millionaire living on Long Island, on the East Coast of the United States, who is surrounded by a fascinating aura: his shady affairs, mysterious origins, and seemingly immeasurable fortune provide material for many rumors. Although the world seems to be his oyster and he throws lavish dance parties for New York society at his home, he is alone. Deep in his heart he wants to bring back the past and be with the love of his life, Daisy. But she has married tough former football player and current polo player Tom Buchanan.

Nick Carraway, Daisy's second cousin, visits the couple on their property. A casual friendship is born, and Nick decides to move nearby to the house next door to Gatsby, whom Nick soon meets in person. Daisy and Gatsby grow closer again, until a fatal car accident sets in motion a destructive dynamic.

With his novel The Great Gatsby, American author F. Scott Fitzgerald created a true masterpiece in 1925. He created a fitting portrait of the so-called "Roaring Twenties," the 1920s in the United States characterized by economic growth, Prohibition, crime and jazz. The themes addressed, such as decadence, debauchery, idealism and social upheaval, provide ample basis for Enrique Gasa Valga's latest dance adventure.

Enrique Gasa Valga translates F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" into dance. With live music, ballet and jazz, as well as dance pieces and musicals, sometimes come very close. [...]

There were more than enough celebration scenes in this premiere. In the play, narrator Nick (Samuel Winkler) brings the lives of simple workers directly into the party of the beautiful and the rich. On stage, the glitter becomes more abundant from scene to scene (scene: Helfried Lauckner), while the dancers' outfits become increasingly skimpy (costumes: Birgit Edelbauer-Heiss). In addition, cheeky shoulder action, glittering jazz hands and girls winking brightly. Ballet elements meet acrobatics and free-flowing jazz. [...]

[There is also] the live band - led by pianist Roberto Tubaro and highlighted by singer Greta Marcolongo, who has been gracing TLT since 2014 with her precise voice and "Dante.Inferno." The band is what makes the piece unique. Jazz, blues, songs by Duke Ellington and Bing Crosby, but also new interpretations (e.g. by Meghan Trainor) become the soundtrack of sophisticated society. A challenge for musicians, singers and ensembles, who must also watch each other in wild cascades of improvisation. [...]
